olive oil which has been used throughout the world for thousands of
years as a beauty product, THANAKHA (Tree Bark) has been used in like
manner from the time of the ancient kings of Myanmar. It is still in use
today in the form of a new and updated natural cosmetic. It is said that
in the courts of the Myanmar kings special stewards were appointed
specifically for the daily preparation of THANAKHA. Up to this day it is
said that when THANAKHA is applied, children look cute, girls become
charming and are more attractive and elderly people look healthier.
The bark which protects the plant from insects plays an important role
and has an additional protective layer over it. After 6 to 10 years the
tree will be cut down and a new tree will grow from the stump. During
the felling of the tree it is important that the roots are not damaged
in any way and it is not uncommon for a new tree to grow 3 to 5 times
from the same roots.
For attendance at traditional Myanmar religious ceremonies, THANAKHA
(Tree Bark) is a compulsory beautifying agent for both boys and girls
which has been culturally acceptable for centuries. It is deep rooted in
Myanmar culture in many ways for example the women of Rakhine State have
a competition during the Water Festival in the use of THANAKHA. It is
commonly used as an aromatic substance at many religious festivals by
the young and old and people are willing to pay high prices for the
finest qualities of THANAKHA. Another reason for its use in religious
ceremonies is that the bark is believed to be a psychic cleanser,
particularly for the face. It brightens a person's aura to attract good
vibrations of the Universe.
Thanakha is adored and widely used by the Myanmar women of all ages
centuries ago. The men folk also appreciate this fragrance on their
women. The fragrance of Thanakha stimulates the mind to be fresh and
clear and imparts the beauty of face and body and smoothness of skin.
The effectiveness is that it turns gradually the pale skin into the form
of soft, lucid and wet texture by using continuously. The Myanmar women
use the Thanakha plant from its branches, stems and roots Traditionally
,the barks of these parts are rubbed with a small amount of water on a
hand - smooth surface of Kyaukpyin (rock state).
Thanaka is a prized wood, in 1958 The Forest Act (a product of
the former British colonial government) added Thanaka trees to its list
of protected trees such as teak, stating: “no person shall collect
or remove for trade purposes…Thanaka wood and bark”.
