Despite the blazing heat, women from southern Thailand has an amazing complexion. It is both beautifully light toned and smooth. No expensive cosmetics, no exhorbitant spa treatments are available. These hardworking women spend their days in the harsh elements toiling for a livelihood. But yet, their complexion is one that makes many of us wonder with envy. Many women from developing coutnries live close to tropical forest abundant with herbs. And armed with traditional wisdom, mothers pass on self healing knowledge to their daughters. The knowledge is not about looking good, but actually feeling good. Here we present one example of products derived from this traditional wisdom. Turmeric root is a tuberous plant of the curcuma longa family, related to ginger and native to Southeast Asia. The rhizomes have been used since ancient times in cooking, medicine and cosmetics. Substances called curcuminoids offer many health benefits and cause its distinctive yellow color. Tumeric has many uses. Curcuminoids work to protect cells from the destructive effects of free radicals. The body naturally produces free radicals, but as we age our ability to produce protective antioxidants declines.
