Brushing Irrespective of the length of the hair, if it is healthy and glossy it adds to the beauty of a woman. In order to achieve this, the hair has to be cared for, nourished and brushed regularly. In fact the proverbial 100 strokes of the brush is supposed to keep the scalp healthy with increased blood circulation. Oiling The market has been flooded with many types of hair oils, many do not fulfill the wonders they promise. The hair oils available have strong synthetic perfumes, which are damaging to the hair roots. Coconut oil is a safe bet for it is very mild and cooling for the hair. It also acts as a natural conditioner and makes the hair soft and pliable. It maintains the moisture balance, as a lot of moisture is lost due to harsh chemicals in water and strong shampoos. But just plain oiling of the hair does not produce any results. Oil has to be massaged into the scalp. It has to be slightly warmed before using it. The best way is to take a few spoons of oil at the fingertips and after parting in the hair, apply it gently to the scalp. After applying the oil, the scalp should be massaged lightly in a clockwise and then in an anti clockwise direction. This helps increase blood circulation in the scalp and help stimulate hair follicles, which help the hair to grow. The hair can then be washed with a mild shampoo. See: Kemiri oil Use of herbal pastes Most South Indians especially those who hail from Kerala have long thick hair because they observe the practice of oiling the hair and then washing it off with shikakai or soap nut powder. They follow this ritual twice a week. A paste of a handful each of hibiscus flowers, curry leaves and amla ((goose berry) added to coconut oil and boiled for sometime helps maintain hair. In many parts of South India, a paste of gram flour or green gram powder along with crushed fenugreek seeds is used to wash the hair. This helps in keeping the hair cool. After massaging the scalp with oil, some beauticians suggest Indian turban treatment for hair. Indian turban treatment Diet and hereditary factors Beautiful and luxuriant hair growth depends on diet and hereditary factors too. Bengali women have long beautiful hair because the fish in their daily diet helps hair growth. Green leafy vegetables, curry leaves, milk, fruits eggs and carrots when taken in plenty help hair growth too. Hereditary factors too play an important part in hair growth. For, if baldness runs in the family some men become bald even before they have turned thirty, where as when the mother has luxuriant hair the children often inherit thick hair. So whatever is the length of hair, healthy and glossy hair is an asset any day. Once mistakenly thought to be bad because of its saturated fat content, coconut oil is now known to contain a unique form of saturated fat that actually helps in prevention of various medical conditions. The oil bottle has to stand in hot water for a minute to make it more fluid. Don't add water to the bottle, though, as that would just ruin it! The oil is applied to hair once the hair has been wet with warm water. The oil is left on the hair for a minute, then rinsed off and the hair shampooed as usual.
