Radix Salviae Miltiorrhizae dan shen
Anti-fibrotic agent
500 tabs per bottle
Shantou Biochemistry Med Factory

The Salviae Miltiorrhizae is useful in cases where keloid formation is chronic or when the keloids and scars are still fresh, itchy and painful. Also useful in cases where patients are constantly exposed to radiation, eg. cancer therapy, to prevent scarring. It aids in invigorating the blood, and removing blood stasis. An invigorated blood flow assists in maintaining healthy skin metabolism and wound healing.

The Rhizomes are short and stout, sometimes with remains of a stem at the apex. Externally brownish-red or dark brownish-red, rough, longitudinally wrinkled.

In a Japanese research screening for antifibrotic Chinese herbs, the authors summarized their findings as follows:

We have screened several Chinese medicinal herbs for the presence of antifibrotic agents. An aqueous extract of Salvia miltiorrhiza root was found to inhibit collagen secretion by human skin fibroblasts without affecting DNA or non-collagen protein synthesis. We have subsequently purified the material exhibiting the inhibitory activity and identified it as magnesium lithospermate. From its chemical structure, this compound was predicted to be an inhibitor of the post-translational modifying enzymes prolyl- and -hydroxylases in collagen biosynthesis. Accordingly, it decreased the extent of prolyl- and -hydroxylations in collagen by approximately 50%. Added to cell extracts it inhibited both prolyl- and -hydroxylase activities, but only -hydroxylase activity when added to intact cells. Oral administration of this compound to mice led to a significant reduction of prolyl-hydroxylation in newly-synthesized skin collagen. This naturally-occurring compound thus offers a potential means for treating fibrotic diseases, such as systemic scleroderma and keloid.'

[ Blood Stasis ]

Blood stasis is caused mainly by two factors: Deficiency or stagnation of Qi, Blood Cold and Blood Heat often lead to sluggish flow of Blood and the ensuing occurrence of Blood Stasis. In the case of Qi Deficiency or stagnation of Qi, Blood will fail to be propelled. In the case of Cold attacking Blood, Blood will coagulate. And in the case of Heat entering Blood, the Blood will become stagnated as a result of sluggish Blood flow.

Traumatic injury, failure of Qi to control Blood flow or Heat forcing Blood to flow swiftly may cause extravasation and the ensuing accumulation of Blood to form Blood Stasis.

Features of the diseases caused by Blood Stasis: After formation, the congealed Blood will lose its nourishing effect and disturb flow of Blood in a local area or the whole body, producing a series of symptoms. The features of the diseases caused by Blood Stasis vary with the locations and causes of Blood stasis. If Blood Stasis occurs in the heart, it will cause palpitations, chest fullness, precardiac pain, purplish colours of lips and nails. If it occurs in the lungs, it often presents chest pains and coughing blood. If it occurs at the skin,  nodulations, swellings and pain will manifest.

Although there are many diseases causes by Blood Stasis, their manifestations can be generalized as follows:

Stabbing pain: the stabbing pain is usually fixed, aggravated by pressing and more severe in the night.

Mass or swelling: traumatic injury to the local area of the skin and muscles often presents swelling in the affected part.

1.

Promoting blood circulation to remove blood stasis. It is used to cure stasis due to blood-heat, irregular menstruation, dysmenorrhea, amenorrhea, mass in the abdomen, postpartum lochiorrheaand other syndromes. It can also be administered for treatment of angina pectoris in coronary heart disease, hypochondriac pain due to stagnation of the liver-qi, and stomachache due to blood stasis and sluggish flow of qi.

2.

Relieving restlessness and tranquilizing the mind. The drug is used to cure impairment of ying (the vessels in which blood and qi are lodged) during the course of febrile diseases, vexation and insomnia. Liquor infusion of red sage root taken before retiring to bed can cure neurasthenia.
