Jamu is one of the greatest success stories of the beauty industry, yet it is virtually unknown outside its country of origin, Indonesia. While the more common mixtures are taken for general health, strength and beauty, there are more than 350 well- known recipes for conditions as varied as skin whitening, kidney stones, malaria and flu. Most popular Jamus contain turmeric for its astringent qualities and tamarind for flavour and blood cleansing. The dried ingredients are usually mixed with water plus a little honey or lime to taste. Under commercial production, the potent plant matter is ground into powder and pill form for convenience. Many Indonesian women learn and adopt new or more elaborate vaginal practices at marriage. Among the Javanese and Sundanese, and many other ethnic groups, a bride is prepared for the nuptials by a professional wedding dresser ( tukang pais ).There is no standard way of preparation, but jamu is typically used to reduce vaginal odors and any excessive secretions. Occasionally, the dresser will advise the bride to undergo a special pre-wedding beauty treatment. At a beauty salon or spa, the bride might have her vagina "smoked," by sitting on a chair with a whole in the middle over a charcoal fire on which special herbs are placed to create a fragrant steam.
